PHONY PPL - Yesterday's Tomorrow

PHONY PPL
Yesterday's Tomorrow
2015

I found this record randomly on Google Play, no expectations, no idea what I was in for. PHONY PPL's "Yesterday's Tomorrow" is amazing, pure and simple. There is an incredible mix of 70's Funk, Hip Hop, R&B and classic rock in this debut album. I am floored on how well it all works together. The Hip Hop elements combine perfectly with the funky flare and none of it is overpowering in one direction or another. What it reminds me the most of is the neo-soul movement of the early 2000's (Think The Roots, Cody Chestnut ect. ect.), but nothing is forced. The album flows together exactly like it should making listening to it start to finish wholly enjoyable. Its a great record to put on and just vibe to.

There is one track that has an pot smoking interlude, that is more corny than anything else and seems really out of place. It's not needed on a album that is already pretty long (five tracks over 4 minutes long). My all out favorite track is "Take a Chance, it has a great beat, very solid singing and rapping as well as other musical elements that make it a real standout on an album that is full of them. Do not sleep on PHONY PPL, please go check them out, I can assure you will not be disappointed.

9 out of 10 😻
